Uses
Finasteride is used for treating baldness in men with mild to moderate hair loss on the top of the head and the front of the mid-scalp area. It increases hair growth, improves hair re-growth, and slows down hair loss. It works only on scalp hair and does not affect hair on other parts of the body.
How to take
Take Finasteride orally with or without food. For maximum benefit, take Finasteride regularly once a day. Continue to take Finasteride even if you notice improvement of your symptoms. Taking Finasteride at the same time each day will help your remember to take it. Do not miss any doses.
Side effects
In multiple clinical studies adverse reactions were noted to be rare and did not affect most men. The most common adverse reaction was decreased libido that appeared to occur in less than 2.0% of men taking this medicine. The problem quickly resolved in all cases upon the discontinuation of the medication.
Precaution
Finasteride tablets are film coated; therefore women can safely handle the intact tablet. Nonetheless, a crushed or broken tablet should not be handled by women who are pregnant or who may be pregnant due to potential adverse effects of this medication on the male fetus. Caution should be used when men with liver disorders take Finasteride. This medicine is broken down by liver-enzymes. Therefore, in patients with liver disease Finasteride can cause hepatitis (liver inflammation), although this problem is seen very rarely.
Drug interactions
Finasteride does not appear to have any significant interactions with other drugs taken concomitantly.
Missed dose
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember; do not take if it is almost time for the next dose, instead, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not "double-up" the dose to catch up.
Storage
Store at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (15-30 degrees C) away from light and moisture. Keep this medication and all other medications out of the reach of children.
